View of the obelisk standing in the Hippodrome square, Istanbul. The obelisk was brought from Karnak Temple, Egypt, by Theodosius the Great in 390 AD. It was originally constructed by the Egyptian pharoah Tutmose III in about 1490 BC. It still stands today in Istanbul on a marble pedestal in the same spot, now known as Sultan Ahmed Square. The dome and pillars of Hagia Sophia can be seen in the background. The photograph is signed and captioned in the negative, 'F Bedford Constantinople'.
