A pair of soft-paste porcelain wine bottle coolers in bleu céleste ground and gilded decoration with moulded white rims edged with gold and a gilded foot ring. The gilded frames of the two reserves are composed of a foliate moulding along the top and of a laurel trail along the sides and bottom; the laurel trail, attached at the top by a stud, extends in a loop below each foliate handle. Threaded through the loop and seemingly passing behind the handles are crossed bay-leaf branches.
Provenance
Part of the Essex Service first recorded in the Royal Collection in the Confectionary at Carlton House in an inventory dated 1826 ‘No. 130. A Dessert Service of light blue and gold Seve Porcelain' noted as purchased from Lord Essex.
