Warden at Windsor Castle
Working for us

Find out about our huge range of roles and what it's like working for Royal Collection Trust

Jennifer, Book Conservator-Restorer

Based at Windsor Castle, we specialise in the conservation of historic and modern bindings and archival material. We stabilise and repair books with minimal interference to their original structures, and on occasion we will produce full facsimile rebindings.

We also produce new work, including gifts for visiting Heads of State. We recently created a new binding for a limited edition of James Joyce's Dubliners, which was presented to the President of Ireland by Her Majesty The Queen.

The emphasis in all our work is on the use of high-quality materials and historically appropriate techniques. The manual skills that we use, such as edge gilding and gold finishing, have been employed since the reign of George III when the Bindery was based at Buckingham Palace.

As well as maintaining a traditional skill base, we employ up-to-date conservation techniques and have an active involvement in contemporary craft and design binding.

Along with a recognised qualification and experience in book conservation, it is important to have excellent manual skills and attention to detail. You need to be organised and able to prioritise work in order to complete conservation treatments on schedule  and to a high standard.
