The Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace

Home to historic royal carriages and one of the finest working stables in existence.

The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace is responsible for all road travel arrangements for The King and members of the Royal Family, from horse-and-carriage to car and from livery to harness.

See behind the scenes at a real working stables in the heart of London, steeped in royal history, and marvel at the iconic 260-year-old Gold State Coach, used at State occasions such as Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953, the Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and King Charles III Coronation in 2023.

The Royal Mews is part of a working royal palace so sometimes closures can happen at short notice. Any closure dates will be listed here.

Practical information

  • When you arrive, you will pass through an airport-style security check. Read more about security & luggage.
  • You can visit the Royal Mews at your leisure using the complimentary multimedia guide, which lasts approximately 45 minutes and is available in English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Spanish. The English-language guides feature versions tailored for families (children) and D/deaf and hard of hearing visitors. An audio-descriptive guide for blind or partially-sighted visitors is also available.
  • Toilets, a Changing Space and baby-care facilities are located adjacent to the large State Coach House in the middle of the visitor route. The Changing Space is also available to non-visiting members of the public on open days, Thursday to Monday, subject to security search.
  • You can take photographs in the Royal Mews. Read about photography, filming & mobile phones.
  • Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the Royal Mews.
  • Pushchairs can be taken into the Mews. Read more about visiting with children.

The nearest train stations are London Victoria (10 minute walk) or London Charing Cross (20 minute walk).

By underground

The nearest tube stations are Victoria, Green Park, St. James's Park and Hyde Park Corner (all approximately 10 minutes walk).

By coach / bus

Bus numbers 11, 211, C1 and C10 stop on Buckingham Palace Road.  Victoria Coach Station is a 10-minute walk from the Palace.

Eating and drinking are not permitted inside the Royal Mews, except for bottled water. You will be asked to place drinks and food in closed bags before being admitted. Food and drink are not available for purchase at the Mews, but there are many cafés and restaurants in the local area.

Coach parking

We can advise on the nearest coach set down and pick up points. Unfortunately there is no coach parking near the Royal Mews.

Guiding

London Blue Badge Guides are allowed to guide at two points in the Main Quadrangle. Visitors can also enjoy a free multimedia tour.

Access and mobility

The Royal Mews is fully accessible. Concessionary rates are available if you have a disability and we offer a free access companion ticket which can be booked online.

An accessible toilet, a Changing Space and seating are available.

Registered assistance dogs are welcome.

The multimedia guide is available in British Sign Language (BSL) and with subtitles, and an audio-descriptive guide is available for blind or partially-sighted visitors.

A number of Wardens are Dementia Friends, please ask staff for any assistance. You can also download a sensory map (PDF).

The Mews visitor route is mostly outdoors but mostly covered, taking in several stable and coach-house areas. You may wish to download a photo journey (PDF) to help you plan your visit.

There is no café or parking available at the Royal Mews, but both are available nearby.
