Was armour heavy? Let's find out....

Trying on replica armour during a schools' session at Windsor Castle

Was armour heavy and hard to move around in?  What did it take to be a medieval knight?  What's the word for an armour shoe? Pupils learn fascinating facts about armour worn by kings, princes and knights, and discover how and why it evolved from medieval times to the Tudor period and beyond.

Through handling and role play we look at how the medieval squire dressed his knight for battle and children try on replica armour pieces, representing armour on display in the State Apartments, and compare them with items of modern-day body armour to show that body protection in a different form is still worn by many today - including the children themselves.

"It was amazing, the children loved handling the armour."
