Ricci's tempera paintings on leather

These small paintings, all in their original Venetian frames, were made using the unusual technique of technique of tempera or gouache on fine leather. Smith, who knew Marco well, collected 33 of them. The painting of an Italian town is inscribed on the verso ‘per Madama Smit’, and is assumed to be a gift to Catherine Tofts, who married Smith in about 1717.
