Tuesday, 7 August 2012

Buckingham Palace has welcomed Great Britain’s Olympic gold medallists Heather Stanning and Helen Glover following their victory in the women's pair at Eton Dorney on Wednesday, 1 August.  The rowers won the first gold for Team GB at London 2012 and made history by becoming the first British female rowers to win an Olympic title.

The Olympians and their coach Robin Williams visited the Palace’s 19 magnificent State Rooms and the special exhibition, Diamonds: A Jubilee Celebration, on Friday, giving BBC’s Garry Richardson an insight into their experiences. They then relaxed at the Garden Café, on the Palace’s West Terrace.  A short film of their visit was broadcast on BBC1 on Sunday 5 August.

Photographs dating from 1908 highlight the long-standing association of the Royal Family with Olympic Games and are on display in the Palace Ballroom where The Queen hosted receptions for the International Olympic Committee and for the Heads of State and Government attending the Opening Ceremony of the XXX Olympiad. Buckingham Palace is open 31 July - 7 October 2012.
