The South Polar Times, 1903

British polar explorers would often stave off boredom by producing a newspaper, and Scott’s Discovery expedition was no different. Both officers and men contributed to the South Polar Times, which contained a mixture of scholarly articles and humorous pieces, such as ’Ode to a Penguin’ by Fitz-Clarence (Lieutenant Michael Barne), shown here. The illustrations were chiefly by Edward Wilson. The typed monthly issues were published in London following the return of Discovery. The pictorial panel on the front cover shows Discovery at winter quarters.
