The Queen's Coronation 1953

Invitation to the Coronation

The wood engraver and book illustrator Joan Hassall (1906–88) won the competition to design the official invitation to the 1953 Coronation.

In addition to the official invitation, Hassall also designed the personal invitation that The Duke of Cornwall received to the Coronation.

This charming design, incorporating the Royal Arms and National Emblems, reveals the meticulous observation and skill that were hallmarks of Hassall’s work.
