Designs for Scotland

During The Queen’s annual official residence in at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Her Majesty undertakes numerous official engagements including investitures and garden parties. Shown here are examples of formal day dress by Scottish born and Scottish-trained designers worn in Scotland including the ensemble worn by The Queen to open the new Scottish Parliament in 1999, designed by Sandra Murray (b.1951) and two outfits designed by Stewart Parvin (b.1967), who trained at Edinburgh College of Art and continues to design for Her Majesty today.

Also shown here is a day ensemble designed by The Queen’s Dresser Miss Angela Kelly for the visit to Scotland of Pope Benedict in 2010.

The Queen regularly wears the ceremonial dress of the British orders of chivalry of which she is Sovereign Head, both for services of installation and also occasionally for portrait sittings. This includes the mantle, hat and insignia of the Order of the Thistle, the highest honour in Scotland, as shown below.
