Short talk - Electress Sophia rediscovered

Thursday, 8 May 2014

Electress Sophia of Hanover was the granddaughter of James I and mother of George I. To this day every heir to the British Throne must be her direct descendent. Sophia had an unusual interest in the arts and sciences, which had a great impact on the patronage of her son and grandson. Wolf Burchard, Exhibition Curatorial Assistant, will discuss the only portrait of Electress Sophia in the Royal Collection that shows her as an elderly woman. Previously wrongly identified, it is the first time that this portrait is going on public display.
