Lecture: Politics, religion and culture explored through two Renaissance tapestries

Tapestry - Triumph of Time over Fame

Wednesday, 28 November 2012

Dr. Maria Hayward, Author and Textile Historian

This lecture will examine the political, religious and cultural contexts of two tapestries - Peace and Mercy Win the Promise of Redemption for Man and The Triumph of Time over Fame. It will view them against the background of the marriage of Henry VIII's sister, Mary, to Louis XII of France and the rise to power of Cardinal Wolsey. Focusing on the early years of Henry VIII's reign, it will explore the making and acquisition of tapestries, the significance of their design for the buyer and their uses within the domestic interior.
