10-Minute Talk: Dürer and the art of the goldsmith

Probably Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, The Dürer Cup, 1827

Thursday, 29 November 2012

‘All kinds of wonderful objects of various uses, much more beautiful to me than miracles’: this observation was made by the artist Albrecht Dürer on seeing the gold and silver treasures presented to the Emperor Charles V. This talk from Kathryn Jones, Curator of Decorative Arts, will compare a silver-gilt cup designed by Dürer himself with those ‘wonderful objects’ created by the goldsmiths of his hometown of Nuremberg.

10-Minute Talks are free with an exhibition ticket or 1-Year Pass.

Relates to The Northern Renaissance exhibition at The Queen's Gallery, London, 2012-2013.
