In Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s painting Massacre of the Innocents, the terrible tragedy is set in an ordinary village in the Netherlands. In Marten van Heemskerk’s The Four Last Things, the last moments of man’s life on earth are depicted in a fantastical other world. Lucy Whitaker, Senior Curator of Paintings, explores these two visualisations of death and the everyday.

10-Minute Talks are free with an exhibition ticket or 1-Year Pass.
