Women Photographers

The Royal Collection contains a significant body of work by women photographers

Olive Edis (1876–1955)

In March 1919 Olive Edis was finally granted permission to photograph on the Western Front. The commission established Edis as the first British women to be employed as an official war photographer. In France, Edis captured the destruction of war in poignant images of ravaged landscapes and deserted towns.
