The Kaiserbagh was the palace built by Wajid Ali Shah, the last King of Awadh.

Lucknow had been one of the cities affected by the conflicts of 1857. Although the bloodshed had occurred almost 20 years prior to the Prince's visit, the conflict was embedded in the collective memory of the countries involved and as such Lucknow became an important stop for British tourists travelling through India. Large sections of the Kaiserbagh were destroyed as a result of the fighting. By the time of the Prince's tour, the palace was used for government offices.
