Queen Victoria was an avid reader from childhood. Her journals are full of references to, and sometimes her opinions about, the books she read alone and with Prince Albert. Family members would often make presents of contemporary literature to the Queen.

This literary annual, which contains a short ghost story by Charles Dickens, was given to Queen Victoria by her mother, the Duchess of Kent, for Christmas in 1851.
