Brought up in Devizes in the late eighteenth century, Sir Thomas Lawrence was the most fashionable and also the greatest portraitist of his generation. The Waterloo Chamber at the heart of Windsor Castle is dominated by magnificent portraits of monarchs, commanders and statesmen from the alliance that defeated Napoleon painted by Lawrence, capturing a turning point in European history.
