French furniture collected by a true Francophile

ATTRIBUTED TO ANDRÉ-CHARLES BOULLE (1642-1732)

Pair of Cabinets

c.1700

RCIN 21631

These cabinets were almost certainly purchased by George IV from the dealer, Robert Fogg, in 1813. They were sent to Morel and Seddon for restoring and re-gilding as part of the furniture and furnishing supplied for the Long Gallery (now the Grand Corridor) at Windsor Castle.

These ebony and Boulle marquetry cabinets exemplify the exuberance of Boulle furniture that George IV was so drawn to. On both cabinets the face of Bacchus, god of wine and fertility, adorns the central door, surrounded by a sunburst. Below, a figure (possibly Ceres) stands on a marquetry and gilt-bronze pedestal.
