Brighton Pavilion: The Making of a Pleasure Palace

Exotic domes and minarets only hint at the splendours inside

ROBERT JONES

Four painted wall panels

circa 1810

RCIN 755

These four canvas wall panels painted with Chinese figures dressed in chinoiserie costume are today at Buckingham Palace. They were part of a larger set that hung in the Banqueting Room at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton. Some paintings from the set were later returned by HM The Queen to Brighton but most in the Banqueting Room today are versions painted by French artist Antoine Dury in 1864.
