1800-02

RCIN 61169

In 1802 Napoleon created the Légion d'Honneur, the highest decoration in France. This sword was presented to Don Manuel de Godoy (known as the Prince of Peace), as a knight of the Order. Godoy served under Charles IV of Spain in various political and military roles. After he was exiled in 1809 the sword was purchased for Wellington's brother, Richard, Marquess Wellesley, who later presented it to the Prince Regent.
