Légion d'Honneur - Emperor Napoleon I's Star

c.1802-14

RCIN 441475

The tinsel star of a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Légion d'Honneur. The star is made of silver, silver thread and sequins in accordance with the statutes of 1802-14. The imperial eagle faces right with thunderbolts in its claws, surrounded by the motto HONNEUR ET PATRIE (For honour and the fatherland). This is the star which was worn by Napoleon during his exile on St Helena. It would have been sewn on to a coat for daily wear as required by the Order's Statutes.
