SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (1769-1830)

Charles, Archduke of Austria (1771-1847)

1819

RCIN 405140

Archduke Charles was one of the greatest generals in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. Wearing his Austrian army uniform and grasping an unsheathed sword, Lawrence portrays the Archduke as a dashing military hero. Described as a small figure in life, Lawrence paints Archduke Charles from below so that he appears as a towering figure against the turbulent battle sky.
