A design for a pyramid commemorating the Napoleonic Wars

1815

RCIN 918932

In the immediate aftermath of Waterloo, numerous memorials to the battle were proposed, although most remained unrealised. Among them was this design for a huge pyramid, as high as St Paul’s Cathedral, which would commemorate the Napoleonic Wars in general and the contribution of both the army and navy. This watercolour was sent to the Prince Regent for his consideration, but the pyramid was never built.
