FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

The Royal Family in 1846

Signed and dated 1846

RCIN 405413

Winterhalter was released from his duties as court painter to the French king Louis-Philippe to undertake this ambitious family group, in which the Queen appears as both sovereign and mother. The maritime setting evokes the view from Osborne, the new royal residence on the Isle of Wight, where the picture was intended to hang.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1846
