The Alhambra table fountain

1852-53

RCIN 1569

This table fountain was inspired by the Moorish architecture of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. The horses were modelled on Arabs from the Queen’s stable. The fountain was shown at the 1853 Dublin exhibition and again in 1855 in Paris, to universal praise. The dome conceals a reservoir from which water flows for up to two hours.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1851

No. 194
