SIR EDWIN LANDSEER (1803-73)

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at the Bal Costumé of 12 May 1842

1842-46

RCIN 404540

For the ball at Buckingham Palace in 1842, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were dressed as the fourteenth-century monarch Edward III and his beloved consort, Queen Philippa of Hainault. The costumes were based on tomb effigies, although Queen Victoria maintains the fashionable Victorian hourglass silhouette.
