This chair is made from the wood of the ‘Waterloo Elm’, the tree which stood near the centre of the British lines at Waterloo and which was the principal command post of the Duke of Wellington, under which he directed the battle on 18 June 1815. The design on the back celebrates the British triumph; it is carved with a lion on the battlefield at Waterloo.
