HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (1497/8-1543)

Princess Mary, later Queen (1516-1558)

c.1536

RCIN 912220

Princess Mary (1516 – 1558) was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Her parents’ divorce and her father’s subsequent marriages saw her removed from the line of succession. On the death of her half-brother Edward in 1553, however, she became Queen. This portrait may date from 1536, when Mary was briefly reconciled with her father under the influence of Jane Seymour.
