JOOS VAN CLEVE (1485/90-1540/1)

Eleanora of Austria, Queen of France

c.1531-4

RCIN 403369

Eleanora, sister of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, married Francis I and was crowned Queen of France in May 1531. The panel is French oak so the artist probably painted her whilst working at the French court. The Spanish inscription on the letter identifies her as the ‘most Christian Queen’, a papal title granted to her as Queen of France.
