MARTIN LUTHER (1483-1546)

Contra Henricum Regem Angliae

1522

RCIN 1053318

Luther was swift to publish this scathing response to Henry’s Assertio Septem Sacramentorum. The woodcut title page, attributed to the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472 – 1553), indicates Luther’s opinion of his opponents: on the left, a jester blowing a wind instrument; on the right a fat cleric with the head of a pig.
