LUCAS HORENBOUT (C. 1490/5-1544)

Henry VIII (1491-1547)

June 1526 - June 1527

RCIN 420640

The Flemish illuminator Lucas Horenbout deployed his skills in a variety of ways in his capacity as Court Painter to Henry VIII. This miniature and the adjacent one are thought to be the earliest surviving portraits from life of Henry VIII. They are also the earliest English examples of the art form of the portrait miniature. They were produced at the same period as similar work in France suggesting strong links between the artistic communities at the English and French courts.
