FRANK HURLEY (1885-1962)

Worsley standing next to a working pressure ridge

Aug 1915

RCIN 2580084

The photograph shows the immense block of ice being pushed up (’rafted’) by two ice floes forced together. The contrast between puny man and all-powerful nature is emphasised in this photograph. Frank Worsley (1872-1943), Captain of the Endurance, looks up at the crest of the ice block that could have toppled and crushed him at any moment.
