FRANK HURLEY (1885-1962)

Typical pack ice, Weddell Sea, lat. 62° 50' S. long. 17° 21' W

Dec 1914

RCIN 2580053

Hurley would have hauled both himself and a heavy camera high into the rigging to take this picture. The pack ice stretches out as far as the eye can see. It was described by Shackleton as ’a gigantic and interminable jigsaw-puzzle devised by nature’.
