The Elephant Island Party

10 May 1916

RCIN 2580121

This photograph of Shackleton’s crew, taken two weeks after the James Caird’s departure, demonstrates their bedraggled state, their clothing and heavily bearded faces blackened by blubber smoke. The chimney of their boat shelter can be seen in the background. Frank Wild, who had been left in charge, is sitting second from the left, with a pipe in his mouth.
