Taking the dogs out for exercise

Aug 1915

RCIN 2580089

Shackleton’s travel plans for the Antarctic crossing depended on having highly-trained dog teams. The dogs were housed in ’dogloos’ on the ice, with teams assigned to individual leaders for training throughout the winter. A Dog Derby was held on 14 June, in the middle of the Antarctic winter, with bets taken in chocolate and cigarettes.
