Skinning penguins on Elephant Island

April-August 1916

RCIN 2580117

The food supplies remaining from Endurance were dangerously low, and the men’s chances of rescue extremely uncertain. The chief food source was the surrounding wildlife, but a diet rich in seal and penguin meat soon palled, and the men pined for carbohydrates. Food became the chief topic of conversation, with inspiration usually derived from a penny cookbook.
