HERBERT GEORGE PONTING (1870-1935)

Osman, 'our best sledge dog'

1911

RCIN 2580028

Osman, like most of Scott’s sledging dogs, survived the expedition. Unlike his rival Amundsen, Scott did not use dogs on the final trek to the South Pole but instead relied on manpower to haul the heavy sledges. Osman was later taken by the dog handler Dimitri Gerof to New Zealand, where he lived out a happy retirement.
