SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922)

Aurora Australis, 1908-09

1908-09

RCIN 1121970

Aurora Australis was the first book ever to be printed in the Antarctic, on a press donated by Joseph Causton and Sons. It contained a mixture of serious essays, poetry and light-hearted verse, with illustrations by George Marston, the expedition artist on both the Nimrod and the Endurance. Around 80 copies were produced, with bindings made from packing crates (in this case one that had stored mock turtle soup).
