HERBERT GEORGE PONTING (1870-1935)

A weathered iceberg

29 Dec 1911

RCIN 2580032

The expedition named prominent icebergs to help with travel and navigation. This berg, known as the Church Berg, was photographed several times by Ponting over the course of a year. He often included figures to provide a sense of scale. Here, the individual on the right is Anton Omelchenko, the groom, who had been responsible for purchasing the Siberian ponies.
