JOHAN JOSEPH ZOFFANY (FRANKFURT 1733-LONDON 1810)

Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) with members of her family

c.1771-2

RCIN 401004

The scene shows the royal family resting during a walk in the park, the over-excited children vying for the attention of their Mecklenburg-Strelitz uncles, the Queen’s brothers. This outpouring of natural gaiety and affection breathes the spirit of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose ideas were popular at this time in enlightened circles in England and Germany.
