JOHAN JOSEPH ZOFFANY (FRANKFURT 1733-LONDON 1810)

Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) with her Two Eldest Sons

c.1765

RCIN 400146

The two Princes are playing in fancy dress while the Queen dresses for dinner. The scene takes place on the ground floor of Buckingham House, used by the Queen while her own apartments were being prepared above. Their slightly old-fashioned décor makes for a strangely fantastical environment where reality is confused with the images of paintings, figurines and reflections.
