GEORGE STUBBS (1724-1806)

George IV (1762-1830), when Prince of Wales

Signed and dated 1791

RCIN 400142

The Prince of Wales is here presented as a man of fashion, riding his magnificent chestnut horse in London’s Hyde Park. He wears a blue cutaway frock-coat with buff breeches, the ‘uniform’ of members of the Whig Opposition led by Charles James Fox (1749–1806). The tall hat, curled and powdered hair, starched white cravat and soft leather boots were also fashionable at the time.
