ATTRIBUTED TO TITIAN (C. 1488-VENICE 1576)

A Boy with a Pipe ('The Shepherd')

c. 1510-15

RCIN 405767

Titian was apprenticed to Gentile and then Giovanni Bellini, before working with Giorgione, whose death in 1510 left him without a rival in Venice. The boy here seems to be lost in thought, glancing down as if he has just stopped playing the pipe in his hand. It is likely that Titian based this work on a lost original by Giorgione. In the collection of Charles I No. 58
