Loyal addresses

Over the course of her reign, in particular during her Jubilee years, Queen Victoria received hundreds of loyal addresses containing expressions of loyalty from the Indian subcontinent. Many were beautifully illuminated and sent in elaborate caskets.

The artist Ravi Varma (1848–1906) painted one of the Maharanis of Travancore (Kerala) presenting a Golden Jubilee address in a silver book-shaped casket on behalf of the women of Travancore (below). The painting was given to Queen Victoria’s son, Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, on his visit to India in 1889 for presentation to the Queen.
