This drawing depicts one of the colossal painted brick gopurums (entrance towers) of the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, the vivid colours of which are not captured here.

Mackenzie’s surveys involved gathering oral histories of the sites. These were translated into English by his staff, many of whom were Brahmins from the chancery of the Nawab of the Carnatic.
