The Bourne & Shepherd photography studio was favoured by members of Indian royalty and the British Raj. To British audiences, their portraits were familiar in style but also corresponded to Western ideas of the ‘exotic’, especially if the Indian sitter was photographed wearing what was considered to be traditional clothing and jewellery.
