ATTRIBUTED TO CAROL SZATHMARI (1812-87)

Three volunteer Russian soldiers from Bulgaria

1854

RCIN 2500620

This photograph by Szathmari shows Bulgarian soldiers who served with the Russian army during the Crimean War. It is unusual for opposing sides to be depicted by the same photographer and therefore it seems likely that Szathmari, as a neutral party and established artist, was given more freedom than might be expected.
