Whilst Barker’s painting could be displayed and seen by a modestly-sized, fee-paying audience, a print of the painting could be sold to thousands of people across Britain and beyond. In the nineteenth century, it became common practice for prints to be published after topical or popular paintings, as large sums of money could be made for the copyright holder.
