Richard England (1793–1883), who had first seen military action during the Napoleonic wars, was given command of the 3rd Division during the Crimean War, aged 61. His troops were engaged at the Battles of Alma (20 September 1854) and Inkerman (5 November 1854) but he remains known primarily for his perseverance during the harsh winter of 1854–5. England remained with his troops and did not apply to return to Britain, as did many other officers. He only returned to Britain in April 1855 under the orders of his doctor.
